San Jose Police Horse Mounted Unit (HMU)

Responsibilities as the HMU Trainer:

~ Academy Instructor - Responsible for teaching SJPD's 480 hour riding academy for the new officers coming into the unit. All topics are covered, from nutrition, grooming and horse psychology to arena work and advanced environmental desensitization through the use of nuisance training (using flares, fireworks, smoke bombs, tarps, mounted shooting and much more).
~ Riding Instructor - Provide regular training days for new and continuing officers, ensuring that riders continually progress and improve their riding skills helping them to remain confident and ready to respond to duty at a moments notice.
~Horse Trainer - Provide ongoing training and development for newly acquired horses in the unit. Foundation to advanced training techniques are used to prepare them to face and effectively manage the many physical and mental challenges of patrolling the streets of downtown San Jose. Veteran horses not in active duty are worked regularly to maintain their preparedness for active duty.

~ Unit Management - Responsible for appropriate matching of horse and officer ensuring their successful partnership.

~ New Horse Buyer - Finding, assessing, and purchasing new prospective police horses for the unit.

~ Horse Health Management - Responsible for overseeing the nutritional and medical needs of each horse in the unit.
