San Jose Police Horse Mounted Unit (HMU)

Mounted Officers and their Responsiblities.

The Officers patrol the downtown core of the city, with emphasis on the large parks and the Guadalupe Creek Trail. They also patrol high-risk neighborhoods providing comfort to the citizens and encouraging them interact with law enforcement allowing them feel safe when communicating concerns about various community problems and issues. This relationship promotes intelligence gathering which can be passed on to various specialized support units such as robbery, drug or gang task force units.

The Officers are also deployed in crowd control situations during large community events such as Mardi Gras, Cinco De Mayo. They are also dispatched to protest gatherings where an unruly crowd must be controlled to protect citizens and property. In this situation a fully staffed mounted unit is a necessity for a large metropolitan city.

One officer and police horse is equivalent to 10 officers on foot. The horses size is intimidating and the vantage point is much better from above.

The Officers also offer dignitary security, with the ability to search areas that officers on foot cannot.

The Officers are assigned to numerous speaking engagements at schools, citizen groups and in house barn tours. They fulfill the position of "Ambassadors of Goodwill " representing the police department and the mounted unit in particular.  For the citizens of their city the mounted officer will bridge the gap with the citizens of their communities that they serve.
