Episode 95: Staying for the Children
WHEN RESISTANCE IS ACTUALLY TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING
What happens when your first instinct is to burn the whole thing down... and then you realize the thing you want to leave might not actually be the problem?
This episode starts with some good old-fashioned transparency about our own friendship, business partnership, and what Shayleigh lovingly refers to as her annual “season of resistance.”
This year, it almost took out the Tea House.
What started as “I don't want to do this anymore” turned into a much bigger conversation about disconnection, assumptions, overwhelm, perfectionism, fear of being too much, fear of not being enough, and the patterns we carry from one relationship straight into another without even realizing we're doing it.
Amber realized she had been making herself smaller because she was afraid her ideas, creativity, and “too-muchness” would push Shayleigh away.
Shayleigh realized she was feeling the distance, interpreting it as rejection, and responding with her own familiar pattern: maybe I should just leave.
Neither one of them was actually asking the other what was happening.
Once they finally did, something shifted.
Instead of ending the relationship, they found the connection underneath the resistance. And almost immediately, creativity started moving again.
IN THIS EPISODE:
→ What happens when we assume what someone else needs instead of asking them
→ The difference between genuinely being done and wanting to escape the discomfort of something that needs to be talked about
→ Amber's pattern of shrinking herself when she's afraid she's becoming “too much”
→ Shayleigh's pattern of feeling like what she's giving is never enough
→ Perfectionism, overwhelm, rejection, disconnection and the stories we create around them
→ Why friendships deserve some of the same communication and repair we expect in romantic relationships
→ What happens when you stop trying to solve the surface problem and get curious about what's underneath it
→ Why the Tea House has become less about having our shit together and more about having a place where we can human out loud with people who aren't going to judge us
And apparently repairing our work marriage was all we needed to get creative again, because it led directly into two new experiences we're incredibly excited about.

BEYOND HORSEMANSHIP
October 15-18, 2026
Aptos, California
This is where Amber and Shayleigh's worlds come together in person.
Beyond Horsemanship is an intimate horse-and-human experience combining animal communication, nervous-system-first horsemanship, relationship, real-time feedback from the horses, and the opportunity to explore what's actually happening between horse and human rather than simply trying to “fix” behavior.
You'll have the opportunity to work with your horse while Shayleigh communicates what they're experiencing and Amber helps translate that information into what is happening physically, behaviorally and relationally in real time.
This isn't about getting your horse to perform perfectly in four days.
It's about leaving with more clarity, more connection, and a different way of seeing and listening to the horse standing in front of you.

COME INTO THE TEA HOUSE
If these are the kinds of conversations you've been craving, this is exactly what we created the Tea House for.
It's horses. It's humans. It's relationships. It's nervous systems. It's spirituality. It's learning. It's questioning what we think we know. Sometimes it's deep as hell, sometimes we're laughing until we can't breathe, and usually it's some combination of all of it.
And yes, our Nuts get Riding Your Legacy included with their membership.

GO A LITTLE DEEPER
→ Where are you assuming what someone needs instead of actually asking them?
→ When you feel disconnected or rejected, what is your automatic response: move closer, get smaller, get louder, shut down, or leave?
→ Is there somewhere in your life where “I don't want this anymore” might actually mean “I don't know how to do this the way we're doing it now”?
→ Where have you made yourself smaller because you were afraid your enthusiasm, needs, ideas, emotions, or presence were too much?
→ Where are you demanding more from yourself because some part of you believes what you're already giving isn't enough?
→ What old story are you still telling about yourself, another person, or even your horse that may no longer be true?
→ What could become possible if you stopped trying to decide who is right and became curious about what each nervous system is actually protecting?
